Save Your Energy

It's uncertain whether Winter will be mild this year, regardless of the many predictions we hear daily, but one thing is certain: Winter will be more expensive. Both Gas and Oil - the primary heating sources - are in tighter supply and prices have surged, although a fraction of that which is happening in Europe who is beholden to Moscow. There are many reasons for this including soaring demand as the economy roars back to life globally, an accelerated desire to wean the world off fossil fuels without a good transition plan, low fuel prices that have cut new investment over the past few years, Covid-pandemic-related issues, OPEC production cut-backs, etc.

One thing most homeowners CAN do to cut costs this year is via improving insulation in their homes. The vast majority of homes - especially older ones - have numerous opportunities to insulate better. New double and triple-paned windows can make a difference, and the EPA estimates that the average homeowner can save 15% on heating and cooling costs (11% of total energy costs) by adding insulation in attics, crawl spaces, and basement rim joists. A good old caulking gun/expanding foam to seal little leaks can work wonders!

Here are some other ways to cut back energy usage besides insulation:

1.  Turn off lights when not needed.

2.  Use LED bulbs to reduce electricity usage.

3.  Unplug unused electronics.

4.  Try to use appliances during 'off' hours. Remote timers on washer/dryers, etc.

5.  Check your air ducts for leaks.

6.  Install an insulated tank wrap on your water heater.

7.  Install programmable thermostats.

8.  Use the sun to heat things up.

9.  Use ceiling fans to recirculate heat that tends to rise.

10. Move furniture away from vents.

11. Change furnace filters one a month

12. Heavy curtains can further insulate windows and doors.

13. If your dryer is vented outside, make sure that a dryer vent seal is installed correctly to prevent cold air from blowing in the duct, into your home.

14. If you use your oven, keep it open after use.

15. Storm doors and windows help too.

By following these suggestions, not only will you be saving money on energy this season but also being a great steward for your home. When it’s time for you to sell, future buyers will appreciate that you’ve maintained your home to the best of your ability. And Vesta Home Team can get you moving!
